Tar and Gravel built up RoofingMost houses with flat or nearly flat roofs are topped with built-up roofing, made from layers of asphalt-coated roofing felt. The top layer of asphalt on these roofs is usually covered with crushed rock or gravel. This serves to hold the roofing material down and protect it from damage by ultraviolet sunlight. This is also known as tar-and-gravel roofs. Built-up roofs can last from 10 to 20 years, depending on the severity of the weather. Although built-up roofs are durable, leaks can develop. An older roof may also develop leaks where the asphalt has blistered, where the layers of roofing felt and bitumen have separated or have been exposed to the weather. To keep built-up roofs in good shape, be sure that there are no bare patches in the gravel. Locating leaks in a built-up roof is not always that simple. If there are no obvious signs present, your best choice would be to call a professional roofer.
